Shamuhammed Akmuhammedov

1937-2010

Turkmen artist and film actor Shamuhammed Akmuhammedov was born on 8 September 1937 in the town of Mary. His father died at the front. The future artist found himself in an orphanage in the town of Kizilarvat (now Serdar). Shamuhammed Akmuhammedov studied at the Turkmen State Art School named after Shota Rustaveli. He graduated from the Moscow State Academic Art Institute named after V.I. Surikov. V.I. Surikov Moscow State Academic Art Institute (workshop of M.M. Kurilko-Ryumin). After graduation, he returned to Turkmenistan and began working as an artist at the Ashgabat Academic Drama Theatre. In the late 80s he was Deputy Minister of Culture of the Turkmen SSR. For more than fifteen years he headed the Culture Fund of Turkmenistan. Since 1992 he taught the craft of a theatre painter at the National Academy of Arts. And all this time he actively worked as a painter. One of the most interesting phenomena of the 90s was the informal association of Turkmen artists "Seven", seven painters who amazed contemporaries. It was a bright expressive art that delighted the public. This was the Turkmen School of painting. Other members of the group were Mamed Mamedov, Durdy Bayramov, Chari Amangeldiev, Stanislav Babikov, Kulnazar Bekmuradov and Juma Jumadurdy.Akmukhammedov is a significant figure in the fine arts of Turkmenistan. Member of the Union of Cinematographers of the Turkmen SSR. Member of the Union of Artists of the USSR. Member of the Union of Cinematographers of the Turkmen SSR. People's Artist of Turkmenistan. Professor of the Academy of Arts. His works are kept in various museums of Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and Russia, as well as in private collections.
